Grades 6 and 7's

Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood

It is the summer of 1964 in the town of Hanging Moss, Mississippi. Racial tensions have increased as the freedom fighters from the north have arrived and are working to improve the civil liberties of the African-Americans. The local pool has been closed and the youngsters are unclear as to why this is happening. Glory befriends the new girl in town, Laura, whose mother is one of the freedom fighters. She becomes conflicted between the prejudices of her local friends and her interest in Laura. Hurray for the librarian, Ms. Bloom who leads the way to a more egalitarian town!
